Why do our teeth turn yellow?

As you get older, your teeth naturally turn yellow and dull in color. This occurs as a result of the outer surface of your teeth (enamel) cracking and chipping away. 

As your enamel decays, the inner portion of your tooth, called the dentin, shows through. Dentin is naturally yellow in color. The color then becomes more pronounced over time as the tooth lays down more dentin, changing the color from the inside out.

Other common causes of yellow teeth including:

• Drinking soda
• Smoking cigarettes
• Using chewing tobacco
• Poor oral hygiene

You might also develop yellow teeth if you take certain prescription medications for acne or gingivitis.
