Dentures Q & A
How do I know if I need dentures?
If you’re already missing several teeth or you struggle to eat certain foods because of the condition of your teeth, then dentures may be a good option. However, it’s important to meet with a trained and qualified dentist like Dr. Murray first.
Following an oral exam, review of your medical history, and discussion of your symptoms and goals, Dr. Murray can determine whether dentures or another type of treatment will most benefit you.
What types of dentures are available?
At Murray Family Dental, Dr. Murray offers two types of dentures:
Complete dentures
Complete dentures replace all of the teeth in your mouth. If you’ve lost most or all of your teeth as the result of an accident, injury, or illness, Dr. Murray might recommend complete dentures to restore your confidence and ability to chew and speak.
Partial dentures
Removable or partial dentures feature a series of replacement teeth attached to a pink, gum-colored plastic base. If you have healthy remaining teeth in your upper or lower jaw, Dr. Murray might recommend partial dentures. Partial dentures help fill the gaps in your smile, while preventing your other teeth from moving out of place.
What is the process for getting dentures?
Getting dentures takes a few weeks and a series of dental appointments.
At your first appointment, Dr. Murray performs an oral exam and determines what type of dentures are best for you.
If your remaining teeth are damaged or decaying, she might recommend extractions the same day. Before pulling any teeth, Dr. Murray administers a local anesthetic numbing your teeth and gums.
A week or two later, after your gums heal, you return for your second appointment. At your second appointment, Dr. Murray takes impressions of your gums and jaw.
Afterward, Dr. Murrray sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that makes a series of models or plastic patterns.
At your third appointment, you try on various denture models. During this test phase, Dr. Murray assesses the color, shape, and fit of your final denture cast.
After making necessary adjustments, Dr. Murray sends your final cast back to the laboratory. The technicians at the lab mold your final pair of dentures.
At your fourth and final appointment, Dr. Murray installs your complete or partial dentures and makes any necessary adjustments. Afterward, she provides you with a list of careful recovery instructions.
